The Individual Learning Plan
Supporting personalised musical learning

Charanga and Young Sounds UK have developed a dynamic tool to support young people’s independent music learning and progression: the Individual Learning Plan, or ILP for short.
The interactive resource helps young people take the lead on their own musical journeys by supporting their musical exploration, encouraging them to think about their musical interests and helping to spark conversations with their teachers.
The tool is available to all Charanga subscribers using the Musical School, Charanga Secondary and Music Professional programmes.
How it works
At the heart of the ILP is the relationship between the music teacher and the student and how using the resource encourages a more personalised approach to progression. The ILP guides and prompts the student while allowing the teacher to tailor their lessons to an individual’s needs.
Young people access the ILP – alongside all other content and creative tools their teacher shares with them – in Yumu, the Charanga platform’s student-facing learning space. Everything is in one place. Once set up, learners can use the ILP to:
- ✔ Explore a comprehensive range of ideas for musical development
- ✔ Set goals with their teacher
- ✔ Track their progress
- ✔ Find musical events and opportunities local to them, and much more
Why do students need it?
Too many young people stop learning music beyond primary school because the barriers to progression are too great. The ILP helps them stay the course.

The ILP makes it easier than ever to put students’ goals and ambitions at the heart of the teaching process.

This resource is a game changer. It helps pupils to continuously, throughout the year, achieve.

We’re set on becoming a modern music service, opening our minds to all types of musical learning while preserving the traditional attributes of a music service. Using the ILP helps put children and young people at the heart of everything we do.
How can I access it?

Charanga subscribers can create an ILP for any of their students when creating a Student Group in My Workspace – a dedicated space on the Charanga platform where they collect and organise their teaching resources and students.
Instrumental teachers can obtain a Charanga licence from their local Music Hub or Service or by emailing markcardy@charanga.com.
We’re also giving members of the press exclusive access to the ILP. For more information, interviews or photographs, please contact:

Only by setting their own goals can students truly start to become the musicians they aspire to be. Their achievements could be limitless. The online format enhances their experiences and opens up an even greater world of possibility.

The resource offers a brilliant way to encourage students to really take responsibility for their learning journeys. The ILP is always there, allowing you to review students' goals and targets for the term and from previous years.
Who is the team behind the ILP?
The ILP is being developed by Charanga and Young Sounds UK.
I’ve been following Young Sounds UK’s Furthering Talent programme since its launch and think the framework they’ve developed to support individualised learning is quite brilliant. We're excited to leverage our technology, platform and reach to help scale up this potentially game-changing approach.
Young Sounds UK exists to give talent a chance, and we can do more by leveraging Charanga’s technology. Together we can help talented young people pursue their ambitions to excel in making music and give them the best possible chance to flourish and grow.
About Young Sounds UK
Musical talent is everywhere, but opportunity isn’t. Family finances and other obstacles too often get in the way. Young Sounds UK is changing this by supporting young musicians from low-income families with funding and other help and supporting music education through training, advocacy and research. This combination creates a real impact.
About Charanga
over 12,500 and over 70,000 teachers in 64 countries use Charanga’s award-winning music platform, with over 2.5 million children enjoying Charanga-supported lessons every week.
