Charanga Take-off! collected the Outstanding Digital/Technological Resource prize at the 2019 Music Teacher Awards for Excellence on 6 March.

The popular resource is a comprehensive online beginner band method for 16 instruments. In collaboration with its creator, Jan Utbult, we have developed an interactive version of the acclaimed book series but take it further, digitally – complete with technological innovations that widen access and improve children’s learning.

Suitable for wind and brass bands or mixed ensembles, the resource can also be used for whole-class teaching. It offers the perfect balance of fresh new learning and the consolidation of previous knowledge.

Children can access animated scores and versions of their instrumental parts, and can slow down the audio (recorded by real musicians) while maintaining the correct pitch. Teachers have the option of displaying notes and note names, thereby supplementing whole-class teaching. They can even share the resource with their students online for free to motivate and encourage them to practise between lessons, and help them to progress more quickly.

“Take-off! without doubt, nails it when it comes to providing a resource which takes absolute beginners, logically and clearly, through from their first note to a seven-note range… The tunes have a jazzy, funky flavour and punchy brass riffs which will get the classroom rocking,” Music Teacher Magazine said.

Teachers in 62 music hubs have adopted Charanga Take-off! since its launch. Most are using its ease of access to plan large-scale performances where children from across a wide area, can come and play together having prepared online.

“Charanga Take-off! has provided a wonderful opportunity for us to engage as a Hub with great quality progressive materials,” said Andrew Hird, Senior Manager, Lincolnshire Music Service. “Students and staff alike have been really inspired and it’s provided a real buzz of excitement.”

Combining gleaming technology, outstanding pedagogy and high music production value, Charanga Take-off! is helping thousands of children to learn an instrument in a fun and exciting way, and to enjoy playing together in large-scale performances.
