Donna MintoIf you’re looking for songs to use to support learning across other areas of the curriculum, especially for themed or project work then these new topic collections will be absolutely perfect.

Written by Donna Minto, of Noteable Songs, a highly-respected music specialist with over 20 years teaching experience, initially for her own pupils as a way to deepen links between music and other curriculum areas but also to aid the understanding and memory of a wide range of subject-specific facts.

As well as the ‘Learn to Sing The Song’ app, the accompanying documents include a printable single-line melody with chord symbols for each. The teaching notes contain ideas for simple percussion work which would enhance any performance of the songs but is not essential in the learning of the song. There are also some tips for actions and extension work where appropriate.

The topics which are ‘mini-musicals’ such as Goldilocks contain narrations with some ideas for spoken parts if required plus an indication of staging, helpful hints on getting the most out of your production and best of all, no need for a performance licence.

The new topic collections cover historical eras such Ancient Egypt, Celts and Romans, and Vikings, environmental issues like Energy and Weather, as well as social and cultural areas with People Who Help Us, School, Growing and Us.

In total 26 new themed topics will be added over the autumn term, between them offering more than 150 new songs. Most of the collections are suitable for 5-11 year olds so you can choose to use them where they best match your school’s curriculum areas.
