Case Study: Lancashire Music Service

Lancashire Music Service are using Charanga’s eLearning Resource to support their activities in Wider Opportunities, Instrumental Learning and curriculum support. Lancashire Music Service primary schools are able to claim a free login and these schools benefit from the system’s Learning Management System integration, the growing range of curriculum resources and the ability for pupils to login and access lessons and resources outside of school, using their LMS logins.

Wider Opportunities

Lancashire Music Service is providing teacher logins to their system to all teachers and schools delivering Wider Opps programmes. (See also school learning management systems below.)

OUTCOME: Class teachers can reinforce with the class between lessons with the Music Service tutor using the same resources as the tutor.

Instrumental Learning – teachers and students

Lancashire Music Service has developed a core curriculum for every child learning an instrument in small group tuition. The core curriculum exists in print and interactive formats which both appear in their eLearning system. If the Music Service teacher can use the interactive materials in the lesson, that is obviously beneficial. However, if the tutor can’t use them in the lesson due to the physical setting for example, they can use the print versions. Either way, the benefit is that students can access the resources they use in lessons in an interactive format between lessons.

OUTCOME: From Sept, half of all Lancashire Music Service students (as distinct to school classroom-based students) will have access to interactive Lancashire Music Service core curriculum between lessons via the Music Service’s eLearning site.

Schools – Lancashire Music Service Curriculum Support

With a wide range of curriculum resources currently being developed for the system, both specialist and non-specialist primary teachers are welcoming the Lancashire Music Service eLearning system as a valuable classroom resource. (INSET training feedback forms show almost 100% satisfaction with the resource)

All primary schools buying in services from Lancashire Music Service can claim a free login to the system from the Music Service. Schools not buying in other services from the Music Service can pay a subscription and receive the curriculum content only (not instrumental content). In this case the contact between Music Service and school opens a dialogue where none previously existed and the prospect of supplying these schools with face to face services is increased.

In August, Charanga is introducing formal lesson planning tools to the system which will embed interactive resources from the system in the lesson plan. Teachers can make their plans shareable by other teachers and comment and rate plans. Lancashire Music Service Curriculum Support staff can create plans and schemes of work and base training services around these.

At KS3, Lancashire Music Service has additionally deployed 21 own-branded interactive software courses for Guitar and Keyboard, with Bass and Drums to follow, to support its roll-out of Musical Futures initiatives.

OUTCOME: By Sept, two thirds of all Lancashire primary schools will be using Lancashire Music Service interactive curriculum resources in the classroom, and have access to targeted curriculum support training from the Music Service.

All Lancashire secondary schools will have access to the Lancashire Music Service online resource as well as 21 interactive self-directed learning courses for guitar and keyboard

School learning management systems - SCORM

Charanga has introduced the facility for schools to download SCORM (a learning management system standard) packages from the Lancashire Music Service eLearning system to embed in their school’s learning management systems (LMS). This facility enables class teachers to use Lancashire Music Service interactive resources in everyday curriculum music work and homework which students can access in class and at home via their school LMS login.

Going forward, this is a seamless way to deliver targeted resources to individual students and to collect assessment data and statistical data which can be fed into personal reporting and the national survey.

This firmly positions Lancashire Music Service at the centre of music eLearning in Lancashire schools.
