Whole school primary scheme for music

Charanga Music’s whole school primary scheme will be suitable for everyone involved in music making in a school. Pupils from the youngest to the oldest, classroom teachers whether they feel musically confident or not, music coordinators, NQTs, support staff and visiting instrumental teachers, will all be empowered to use high quality digital resources suitable for a whole class music lesson.

Fun, comprehensive and engaging Schemes of Work each lasting up to 6 weeks (or half a term), will fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum. Through this modular approach, musical learning is revisited and developed over time and, with clear differentiation, can offer flexible usage across the Key Stages.

These flexible modules will be firmly based on musical concepts explored through:

Singing – learn to sing a popular song, for example Mamma Mia or perhaps Don’t Stop Believin’

Appraising and listening – other songs/music in that style or from that era

Musical games

Playing instruments with the song

Performing the song with or without instruments

Improvisation – learning to improvise vocally and instrumentally with the song

Composition – with words and graphic scoring

Follow on work – this can include cross-curricular possibilities

Teaching notes and assessment documentation appropriate to each age group will also be available.

Through our whole school solution, we aim to raise standards of musical delivery and musical outcomes in primary schools, encouraging children to continue to enjoy music-making during transition and into Key Stages 3 and 4.

A pilot is already taking place with fantastic results!

“I could do that! I have always been frightened of teaching music and my class have missed out. Now I have seen these resources in action I feel confident enough to deliver them and take the lesson on further. The kids just love the songs!” (Reception teacher).

Parental engagement and learning outside the classroom

Charanga Music’s Pupil Learning Space is used by thousands of teachers to enable instrumental practice at home, music homework activities, and classroom-based group work.

Particularly useful for peripatetic teachers without access to MLEs, the Pupil Learning Space contains lesson modules, individual and/or personalised lessons. Teachers choose ‘enable student access’ to produce a code for pupils.

Music to play along with, videos, cartoons and quizzes all enable pupils to practise between lessons and parents/carers to share in their child’s instrumental learning progress.

Teachers have expressed “Singing or playing between lessons is invaluable” – our Pupil Learning Space ensures this.
